Don't get me started on the backrub scene

Gene Roddenberry, when interviewed for the authorized William Shatner biography Shatner: Where No Man..., was asked about comparisons between Kirk and Spock and the historical relationship of Alexander the Great and Hephaestion, two men widely believed to have been lovers. Roddenberry replied, "Yes, there's certainly some of that – certainly with love overtones. Deep love. The only difference being, the Greek ideal – we never suggested in the series – physical love between the two. But it's the – we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century."
И еще одно интервью:
"I know you've told us you designed that relationship as 'Two halves which come together to make a whole'. Is that how you still see it?"
"Oh yes. As I've said, I definitely designed it as a love relationship. I think that's what we're all about - love, the effort to reach out to each other. I think that's a lovely thing. ...in terms of the characters, yes. That closeness... absolutely."
1976 г. Сборник произведений малой формы The New Voyages (лицензированный, с предисловиями к каждому рассказу от cast and crew), рассказ The Winged Dreamers (про очередную галлюциногенную планету):
Spock reached for the computer, and then his hand hesitated. He turned in his seat and looked down at Kirk. In the depths of his eyes something was kindling. His face was intent with what was almost a dawning joy.
Kirk stared back at him with mild alarm. "Mr. Spock?"
"Jim," Spock said in a whisper, "why do we have to leave here? We can stay. Just you and I. We don't need those others."
"He's off his head." McCoy grunted. "He's finally cracked."
"No. The thing's finally got to him," Kirk said, climbing out of the command seat. "It's offering him the one thing..." He stopped abruptly, realizing that he was giving too much away. He ignored McCoy's startled look and went up to the Vulcan.
"Spock!"
"We can go down to the planet," Spock explained reasonably. "We can be together, always...."
"Spock! " Kirk dragged him onto his feet and shook him.
"Jim, you don't have to hurt me."
"Snap out of it, or I will hurt you!" Kirk snarled into his face.
Spock shook his head, bewildered. Kirk hit him hard across the face-once, twice, three times. A small trickle of blood ran from the corner of the Vulcan's mouth. He lowered his eyes and very slightly shook his head. Kirk carefully let him go; and he put a hand against the computer console to steady himself.
"I'm sorry," he murmured, so low that only Kirk could hear. Kirk touched him on the arm and turned to meet the curious stares of the crew.
(Позже)
Spock bent down and picked up the case containing the butterflies and carried them into the Transporter room. McCoy watched him go, scowling.
"Dinosaurs indeed!" he grunted. "Jim, what was he saying about you and him on the bridge a while back?"
Kirk didn't look at him as he started for the turbolift. "As I think you remarked, Bones, he was off his head."
1978, сборник The New Voyages 2, сонет Soliloquy by Marguerite B. Thompson, от лица Спока:
My father gave no word of love to me.
My mother practiced laudable restraint.
My Vulcan childhood lessons logically
Prepared me to despise the human taint.
I could not blame T'Pring; I saw that she
Let flawless logic over pledge prevail.
For she would stop at nothing to be free
Wisely to mate with a pure Vulcan male.
Human tormentors do not understand
Acknowledgment of feeling causes pain,
Cruelly subvert defenses I had planned,
Plot to anesthetize my watchful brain.
What will they find when I am ripped apart?
I love you, Captain, written on my heart.
1979 г., Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Novellization by Gene Roddenberry)
"Jim! Goodbye, my...my t'hy'la*. This is the last time I will permit myself to think of you or even your name again."
*Editor's note - The human concept of friend is most nearly duplicated in Vulcan thought by the term "t'hy'la", which can also mean "brother" and "lover". Spock's recollection (from which this chapter is drawn) is that it was a most difficult moment for him since he did indeed consider Kirk to have become his brother. However, because "t'hy'la" can be used to mean "lover" and since Kirk's and Spock's friendship was unusually close, this has led to some speculation over whether or not they had actually indeed become lovers. At our request, Admiral Kirk supplied the following comments on this subject:
"I was never aware of this 'lovers' rumor, although I have been told that Spock encountered it several times. Apparently, he had always dismissed it with his characteristic lifting of his right eyebrow, which usually connoted some combination of surprise, disbelief, and/or annoyance. As for myself... I have always found my best gratification in that creature called woman. Also, I would not like to be thought of as being so foolish that I would select a love partner who came into sexual heat only once every seven years."
Эта сноска вызвала раскол в фандоме, где с 1974 г. шли бои вокруг the premise, потому что обе стороны восприняли ее как подтверждение своей точки зрения.
В 1985 г. вышла книга Killing Time: The first printing of this story is a rare example of a licensed work that alludes to a more-than-platonic relationship between Kirk and Spock, as popularised more often in unofficial slash fiction. A revised manuscript was used for subsequent printings.
